The home Pirates escape with a close victory in game # 1 at
Forest Park with a 3-2 score in 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Pirates Ex-National Steve "Knightman" Trzcinski won over his
former team with the help of a two inning save by lefthander
Marty Bernoski. Pirate clutch hitters rookie Gary Elmore and
catcher Andy Ayres had big two out hits. Trailing 1-0 after
two outs in the bottom of the second, Andy Ayres hit a
single, stole second and scored on a shortstop hole base hit
by Elmore. While trailing 2-1 after two outs in the forth
and two runners on base, Ayres blooped a Texas leaguer base
hit to plate the tying and winning run.
Adding to their key hits and rbi's, both Gary and Andy had
some great defensive plays in the field. Centerfielder Gary
Elmore robbed Nat Mark Cole of a base hit with a tremendous
diving and sliding catch in the top of the forth. Pirate
shortstop Jon Black gunned out the tying run in the top of
the seventh, but only with the help of a diving tag made by
catcher Andy Ayres. After the 6-2 fielders choice, an
infield hit with runners on first and second loaded the base
with Nationals with two outs, but their last batter struck
out to end the game. Nationals starter Mike O'Donnell
returning from a sore shoulder, had a strong return effort
by giving up only 4 hits with 6 strikeouts over seven
innings.

Braves hop out to a 7 - 0 lead in the first
three innings and never look back. Craig Kupinsky 11
strikeouts kept the Red Sox off balance all day. His
only real mistake was bomb hit by Jay Sadowski into
the trees. Craig also helped himself at the plate
going 3-3 with 2 runs scored and 1 rbi, he is
credited with all three Braves wins this year.
