In game 2 I t
was the Tigers turn to take a quick lead, scoring 3 in the first off 4 straight
hits and a hit batter, and 2 more in the 3rd. Chris Ciepiela kept the cards off
balance until they chipped away with 1 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th and ultimately
tied it with 2 in the 5th.
The Tigers regained the lead in the 6th when Chris Beebe walked, went to 3rd on
a single by Scott Verville and scored on a suicide squeeze by Brian Johnson.
Verville came around to score a critical insurance run a single by Bob Gillis.
The Cards scored one in the bottom of the 6th to narrow the deficit to 1 runs,
and had the bases loaded with one out. But Chris Ciepiela Eric Bennet and Wally
Lailer combined for a 6-4-3 DP to end the inning. In the bottom of the 7th, the
Cards again had the bases loaded with one out but could not score.

Orioles score three in the bottom of the seventh capped by a
walk off 2 run clutch single by Sam " Sammy Baseball"
Williams. I looked as if Mike Miller was finally going to
end the Orioles 11 game winning streak. He had set down the
top of the Orioles order 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth
and the A's had scored an insurance run to go up 4-2 going
into the bottom of the 7th. Pete Varley opened the final
frame with a hard single to left. Steve "Tester" Testoni
then belted a long double into the gap in right center. The
A's drew both the infield and outfield in as Orioles veteran
Ron Dumont ( 1999 vintage) came to the plate. Dumont ripped
a line drive doubled over the left fielders head to tie game
with no outs.
The A's then issued an intentional
walk to Orioles catcher Monte Kroh (also 1998 vintage) Sammy
baseball then belted a line drive to right center to plate
the walk of winning run.

This game started like game 1 with
the Braves scoring four runs in the first, but this time the Red Sox responded
with 3 of their own in the first and proceeded to score 4 more runs in the next
three innings. Eugene Diana made his first career start in the QVOTBL for the
Braves, but just could not get the run support he needed. Jay Sadowski took the
mound for the Sox and after the first inning, he settled in and never let a
Braves player get past second base for the rest of the game. One Braves
highlight was Odom had stole home in the first, but Supe responded by picking
him off first base the very next inning. The Red Sox also had their running
shoes on as they stole 11 bases, but the Braves were without catcher Scott Bacon
and the back up was playing with a bum shoulder enabling the Sox to run free.
But the Sox also played flawless defense not committing one error. The Sox
looked impressive even if it was only their first win of the season, but well
deserved and earned. Also Braves hitter Kevin Littlefield got his first QVOTBL
hit after playing in 12 games!

The home team Nationals squeak out a close victory in
game # 2 of the doubleheader with the same score of 3-2.
In game # 1 two Nationals got thrown out at the plate,
in game # 2 a Pirate got gunned down at the plate for
the tying run in their top of the 5th. Runs were at a
premium, because all of the pitchers were able to pitch
and get out of jams, including a 1-2-3 double play with
the bases juiced with Nationals in the bottom of the
third inning. The Nationals scored all of their 3
winning runs in the bottom of the first. Shortstop,
manager Bob Stackow was hit by a pitch, followed by
catcher Mike Davis's deep double to left, a base on
balls to pitcher Todd Neumann, then a sack fly by Tony
Maspo. Mike O'Donnell reached on an error by The Pirates
second baseman. Then, Ron Renaudette singled to cap the
scoring at three.
Nationals hard thrower Todd Neumann, struck out 6 over 6
innings and gave up only 7 hits.
A one inning save was earned by junk baller, Tony Maspo
as he walked his first batter, but retired the next 3
Pirate batters via F-7;K and 4-3 to end the ballgame in
1 hour and 56 minutes. Another game highlight included,
Pirate left fielder Andy Ayres, who robbed Nationals Bob
Turgeon in the bottom of the second with a nice diving
grab of a sinking line drive. The umpire stated, that
those good catchers can catch anywhere on the field.
Pitching report: Pirates : Marty Bernoski (3) Larry
Pietras (3)
Nationals: Todd Neumann (6) Tony
Maspo (1)
Respectfully submitted,
Larry Pietras, Pirates Manager
