GAME RE-CAP SUNDAY APRIL 26, 2009

Vs.
APRIL 26, 2009 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
PIRATES 3 6 5 3 1 4 - - - 22 20 3
BRAVES 0 0 2 3 0 2 - - - 4 3 7

The strong rivalry since the 2005 Braves championship come from behind 8-7 win over The Pirates continued at The Herlihy Field QVOTBL 2009 season opener in Whately. The fierce rivalry history includes first round play-off match -ups for the 2007 & 2008 seasons, when each number 7 seed upset the number 2 seed in the first round of the play-offs. Pirates 20 hit attack was lead by former Expo/National veteran lead-off hitter Steve "The Knightman" Trzcinski with a stellar 3-4 day at the plate. The early season weather was warm, but the defense was cold as both teams combined for an ugly 10 error effort. After a commanding
lead Pirate catcher Andy Ayres, in the true sportsmanship attitude of the league, cited league rule 6.3, which states that a 15 run mercy rule only goes into effect after both 5 innings are completed and two hours have elapsed in playing time. The Braves agreed to this interpretation of the rule and play continued until the middle of the sixth inning. Basically, it was a grapefruit league type of game, which counted in the regular season standings. The only game highlights I could come up with were the triples hit by Pirates Todd Somersette and newcomers Eric Morgan.

Respectfully submitted,

Larry Pietras, Pirates Manager

Mike  Maier, who led the Orioles to the play off championship in 2008, picked up where he left off last fall with another strong performance supported by the stingy Orioles defense . Mike's off season training involved a marathon in So. Caroline in mid February as the 47 year old right hander decided to run rather than to swim the English Channel this year. The Orioles opening , however, not only feature strong pitching by Maier, Fran Nai and Sam Williams but an explosive offense as the Orioles pounded out in excess of twenty hits as well as many hard and long drives for outs.   There were were no easy outs as Orioles second baseman and 13th batter ( 57 year old Roberto Mahler) had a career day lashing three line shots to left in four at bats and immediately started attempting to negotiate a new contract. Fran Nai, Steve Testoni, Ron Dumon, Ned Nedeau, Sam Williams and Garry Beard all ripped three hits and several other O's ripped hits as well.. many of which were scored right down the third base line or in the gaps.

The field conditions, umpiring and weather were all 10 's

WP   Maier, Mike ( 6 innings)  Nai, Fran ( 2 innings)  Williams, Sam ( 1 inning)
LP    Verville, Scott ( 5 innings)  Ceipela, Chris ( 2 innings)  Healy, Jim ( 2 innings)
