Mike Maier and the Orioles league leading
defense held the Tigers to 1 unearned run through six and Fran Nai mopped up
as the Orioles won their 11th straight game 12 - 2
over the Tigers at Booster Field.
Ned Nedeau, Pete Varley and Tester Testoni
lead the Orioles offensive effort. Ned, batting lead off, ripped 4 singles
in 5 plate appearances, stole 3 bases, scored 2 runs and gunned down Tigers
right fielder Pat Johnson from center field at first base by two full
steps. Pete Varley went three for four including a triple into the right
field corner and Tester Testoni put the Orioles ahead to stay in the first
when he lashed a line drive single down the right field line with the bases
loaded to plate the Orioles first two runs.
This game had a delayed start as Wally and
both squads doctored the home plate area
with bag after bag or material Wally imported
en route to the field. Notwithstanding the sunny weather and near ideal
field conditions the base umpire insisted that the game be
cancelled but after yet another delay gave in
and allowed the game to start on the condition that he
could call it at any time. This umpire then left the game after five
innings leaving many players including this writer that his true motivation
for trying to cancel the game was a competing interest he had scheduled in
the early afternoon.
