Tigers hand Pirates first loss of the season

  
 Tigers win a good defensive game with a big assist to the Parson's overgrown infield which slowed up a lot of hard hit balls. Hits were scarce in this one as the Tigers took advantage of good base running when they had runners on base. Using timely steals and hit and runs to plate 4 for the day. Pirates had some chances but stranded 10 base runners. Pirates load the bases with no outs in the 9th, but fail to score as the Tigers turn a 1-2-3 double play and induce a soft pop up to SS to end the game. Great pitching by Tigers starter Jim Healy and Scott Verville in Relief. Pirates pitchers were just as effective. Special props to Jesse Sinclair for heads up base running and scoring 2 runs on the day.

Maier front runner for Cy Young (if we had one)

Mike Maier turned in yet another strong performance on the mound scattering 5 hits in six innings.

Sam Williams pitched the seventh and Pete Varley made his debut on the mound for the last two
frames and was impressive as he had good command of a real live fast ball and breaking pitches.
Rick Fleurent threw another quality start but in the fourth a walk to Bob Mahler; a well placed bunt
single by Ned Nedeau and followed by a double by Garry Beard and single by Steve Testoni put the Orioles up to stay.  Fifty year old rookie Tester Testoni had also blasted a solo homer over the center
field fence in the second inning. Peter Varley scored three runs and ripped two singles. The Orioles middle infield made two rally killing double plays.. to key the stingy Orioles defense which during the current seven game winning streak has only allowed 11 runs..
 
This game was moved from Daley to Booster at the last minute because of a local event being staged at Daley.
